Chapter 10
“Coal! What are you doing?!?” I shouted as I dove
through the clouds after him. Suddenly, I heard laughing above me. I snapped
open my wings, rising with the momentum that I had created.
“You should
have seen your face!” Coal shouted,
barely keeping himself from another fit of laughter. He swooped down to me. On
wings. That were identical to mine. Every feather and the exact shade of
chestnut brown, identical to my own. I almost forgot to flap my own wings when
I saw his. “You like ‘em?” he asked sarcastically.
“H…h…how?”
I stuttered, still shocked at what was before me.
“I have the
power to absorb the abilities of others.” He shrugged, letting my disbelief
slide. “I guess that I was born with it.”
“Do your
parents know about this?” I asked.
“No, it
wears off after a while, I tried it last time that Wolfe was here. That was
when I first found out.” He shrugged again as if it was not a big deal.
“Your mom
told me that you were gone the last time that Wolfe was here.” I said, trying to draw the answers out of
him.
“For most
of the time yeah. I was leaving right as she got here.” He said.
“Well then,
why don’t we go home and tell them about this,” I said and started a long
downward spiral.
“NO! You
can’t do that!” Coal exclaimed. He dropped down in front of me, forcing me to
stop and hover again. “If they find out about this, they will never let me out
of their sight again! Let alone all the other terrible stuff that they could do
to me. You CAN’T tell them.” He was really freaking out at this point.
“Well, all
the more reasons to tell them.” I said coolly before starting the descent
again.
“Please…don’t…what
do you want?” he asked, completely desperate now.
“Don’t
worry, I’m just messing around with you.” I said. “Plus, I’m hungry. I want to
go back to the cabin for dinner.” I heard Coal sigh as I headed back to the
cabin for the third time in five minutes. Once we landed, I headed straight for
the house. “Coal you stay out here, till your wings disappear, I’ll bring you
something to eat.” I said and I dashed inside.
