Chapter 2
Chapter 2
The silhouette
of the huts on the hill stood out against the morning sunrise. Trudging up the
hill, I snuck through the forest. I had hoped to slip inside the village.
“Ow! What in the
world?” I hissed. A stabbing pain split my skull as my vision faded to black.
“Hey she’s
stirring,” someone said.
My eyes shot
open, again, and I looked around. Trying to rub my aching head, I found that my
arms and legs were strapped to a table.
“Let me go!” I
shouted to no one in particular, as I struggled against the restraints. A woman
pushed down on my shoulders from behind.
“Calm down,
you’re safe here.” she said as she struggled to keep me still.
“Then why am I
strapped down?!?” I argued back.
“If you would
just calm down, I could explain,”
Without much of
any other choice, I battled my rage at being restrained, inside my head. I
calmed down and stopped thrashing. The woman undid my straps and as I sat up, I
noticed a big, black, heavy sleeve around my wings. The woman had delicate but
sure hands, and long straight black hair. She was a little more than average height,
and thin. She tossed her head to clear her eyes from the bangs that seemed to
continually fall there. She had a fine nose, and full lips. The most striking
feature about her though were her eyes. They were a piercing shade of blue-green.
They seemed to see directly through me.
“Explain this,
now” I demanded, pointing at my back, tearing my thoughts away from her eyes.
“I am the doctor
and vet, here in this village anyway,” The woman replied. “My name is Amanda
Wolfe, but you can call me Mrs. Wolfe. Two of the local village boys were
playing with a ball and one overthrew it. After chasing the ball, they found
you sprawled out on the ground, next to the ball, behind the village. The boys
brought you here with some difficulty. Seeing that you were injured, they made
a stretcher to carry you here on. However, when they went to lift you onto the
stretcher, you thrashed around at the touch. They brought you here to my house
because you… are different. I only strapped you down so that you would not
injure yourself further.”
“What is the
sleeve for then?” I asked. She seemed to be tiptoeing around the whole wings
subject. I wanted to make it as awkward as possible.
“You have a massive gash on your left wing. This was just the best way I could
think of to bandage it. Now, you should keep it on for a couple of weeks. That
also means no flying; assuming you even can fly,” the last statement was
definitely a jab at my pride. I ignored it however and thought about what this
could mean for me. “Your turn,” Wolfe said, she looked really eager to hear my
side of the story.
“What, do you want the story of how I got here? Well, let’s see, I woke up in
the middle of the forest yesterday. I found my injuries the way they were. I
only know my name, and some weapons are lying around with my name on them. I
then found a stream and when day broke, I found my way here.” I said trying my
best to sound as snooty as possible.
“That’s all you know?” Wolfe asked in disbelief.
“Yup” I tried so hard to keep from arguing on.
“Well then, I’ll just leave you to rest from your injury, you must be tired.”
“More hungry than tired,” I admitted.
“Well, I’ll bring up dinner soon” and with that she left the room, closing and
locking me in as she went.
“Now, to get out of here,” I muttered to myself. Searching the room, I noticed
the bed, with a large square section cut out of it for my wings. There were no
windows in the room and only one door. “Looks like they were expecting me,” I
muttered again.
